Smart meters are designed to transmit automatic meter readings to your energy supplier. However, it is still important to know how to take a meter reading yourself. This page covers how to take meter readings from different types of smart export meter. 

SMETS1 meters 

If you had your smart meter installed before March 2018, it’s likely to be a SMETS1. 

Secure Liberty 100  

  1. Depending on your meter configuration, press either 6 or 9 on the keypad until you see ‘EXP kWh’ followed by 8 digits. 
  1. You’ll then see 8 digits (e.g. 0000369.4) followed by kWh at the bottom right of the screen. This will be your export reading. 
  1. This is your read, so for this example your reading would be 369kWh. 

Honeywell Elster AS300P (three grey square buttons)  

  1. Press and hold the grey middle button until the main menu loads. 
  1. ‘General’ should appear on-screen – press and hold the middle button again to select this option. 
  1. ‘Time & Date’ should now be visible – use the bottom button to scroll until TOU Registers appears on screen. 
  1. Press and hold the middle button again, and you should now see ‘Cum. Exp.’ with a value underneath it. This is your export reading. 

Itron EM425-UK (one orange button, two blue) 

  1. Press the orange button to wake up the display. 
  1. Press the bottom blue button to cycle through until you see ‘Total Registers’. 
  1. Select Total Registers by pressing the orange button, then continue to scroll until you see Exp. Act with a value in kWh. This is your export reading. 

SMETS2 meters 

These are second generation smart meters. If you had your meter installed after March 2018, it’s likely to be a SMETS2. 

Landis & Gyr E470 

  1. Press the A button to wake up the display so that ‘Credit Mode Bal’ appears. 
  1. Press and hold the green ‘A’ button for 3-5 seconds to get the time, and then keep pressing A to cycle through until you see Total Act. Export.  
  1. Your export reading should now be visible, expressed in kWh. 

EDMI ES-10B (two white buttons) 

The buttons may be to the left or right of the meter display. To get a reading from this smart meter: 

  1. Press the right/OK button to light up the display. This is the ‘default’ menu screen. 
  1. While on the default menu screen, use the left/down button to cycle through the different displays until you see the active export register. 
  1. Your export reading should now be visible. If not, use the left/down button to cycle through each value. 

Honeywell Elster AS302P (two grey buttons)  

  1. Press the top button once to bring up the main menu. The display will show ‘General’. 
  1. Press the bottom button to scroll through the display until it says ‘Registers’. 
  1. Press the top button to select ‘Registers’. The display should show ‘cumulative’. 
  1. Press the bottom button to scroll through the values until you see your ‘Export’ in kWh. 

Aclara SGM1400 (one blue button, one orange) 

  1. Press the blue ‘A’ button to wake up the display. 
  1. Continue pressing ‘A’ until you see ‘Total Active Export’. 
  1. Your reading should now be visible on-screen. 

Kaifa MA120  

  1. Your meter will automatically cycle through each reading, so you do not need to press anything 
  1. Wait for your export reading to appear. It will be represented as ‘-A Value’ in kWh.
