Smart Tariffs FAQs

Smart meters give us an accurate view of your usage and allow us to bill you correctly. It sends reads to us every half hour to make sure we know exactly how much you’re using during your peak and off-peak periods.

If you don’t have a smart meter, we will organise for you to have a free smart meter installed. You will remain on your current tariff until the meter is in place and communicating with us, at which time we’ll move you to the smart tariff and you’ll benefit from off-peak rates.

If you already have a smart meter that is capable of communicating with us, we should be able to move you to your chosen smart tariff within a few days.

If your smart meter is not communicating with us, we will try to resolve this. This may require an on-site visit.

If you do not have a smart meter, we will need to organise a free installation for you. This could take 6-8 weeks depending on where you live. Our partner, SMS, carries out the installations on our behalf.

You will receive an email from us to confirm that you have moved to the smart tariff. This will detail your new tariff rates.

All of our tariff rates can be found on our website.

You can find the schedule of our unit rates for each tariff listed in the Tariff Information Label

We use the data from your smart meter to ensure that your off-peak times remain the same throughout the year. This means, that these hours will adjust according to the clocks changing in Spring and Autumn so you don’t have to.

Some of our tariffs are fixed and some are variable.

If the tariff is fixed, we’ll make it clear in the tariff name, but you’ll also be able to check the Tariff Information Label, which will list any exit fees too.

If the tariff is variable, we update rates to ensure the tariff remains fairly priced. The tariff has no exit fee, and you are free to switch to another tariff or energy supplier at any time.

No, we do not have a gas time-of-use tariff. Your gas tariff will remain as is; only your electricity tariff will change.

Shortly after you’re moved on to a smart tariff, your bill will change. You’ll notice that meter readings are no longer listed. Instead, we’ll list the amount you have consumed on each unit rate. This is calculated using the data we receive from your smart meter.

In-Home Displays (IHDs) aren’t designed for the dynamic nature of smart tariffs. To view your tariff rates and consumption, log in to your Good Energy online account or download our app. You’ll find detailed usage graphs and all relevant information there. If your IHD isn’t working at all, please contact us at hello@goodenergy.co.uk.

No. Our smart tariffs recognise British Summer Time (BST) and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This means they automatically adjusts for you, so you do not need to adjust your time of usage when the clocks change during the year.

This does mean that on one morning in Autumn when the clocks fall back, between the hours of midnight and 5am you will have 6 hours of off-peak rates. Then again, on the morning when the clocks spring forward, you will have 4 hours of off-peak rates between midnight and 5am.
