Solar panel FAQs

Your solar panel questions answered

Your savings will depend on your system size, how you use power, your tariff rates and more. An average 3-bedroom home with a 10-panel (4.75kW) solar array could save up to £975.90 a year through reduced grid usage and earnings from a our Solar Savings export tariff, or up to £1448.79 with a battery.

Total annual bill savings are based on standard MCS calculations for a 10-panel (4.75kWp) solar system on a 3-bedroom East/West-facing home with no shading. System estimated to generate 4,822kWh per year, of which 2,000kWh is used at home, reducing electricity bought from the grid, and 2,822kWh exported at 15p/kWh through Good Energy’s Solar Savings tariff. Actual savings may vary depending on system size, tariff rates and household electricity use. Solar packages start from £6,250 (including installation). Price varies by property and system specification. See our full workings here.

Additionally, if you install your solar panels and battery through Good Energy, you unlock our highly-competitive export tariff (25p per kWh) for the first 12 months, meaning savings for the same 3-bedroom home with a 10-panel (4.75kW) solar array and battery could save up to £1,730.99 in the first year.

At Good Energy, we install optimised solar panel systems, using inverters and optimisers from leading brand, SolarEdge. Unlike string inverters, optimised systems enable each panel to perform individually – meaning that if one is shaded, faulty or dirty, the performance of the whole system isn’t compromised too. This helps homeowners to generate more energy from the same number of panels each year. It also means we can provide panel-by-panel performance monitoring for quick fault detection.

Solar panel installation is quick and, for most homes, can usually be completed in a single day. Scaffolding is typically installed a couple of days before the work begins and removed shortly after the installation is finished.

Installation teams prepare each project in advance by completing the system design, technical planning and equipment preparation before arriving on site. This preparation helps ensure the installation itself can be carried out efficiently.

On installation day, the work usually includes:

  • Installing the roof mounting system and solar panels
  • Fitting the inverter and electrical components
  • Connecting the system to your home’s electrical supply
  • Completing system testing and commissioning

In most cases, solar-only systems are completed within a single day. However, installation times can vary depending on factors such as the system size, roof complexity, weather conditions, and whether a battery system is included. Your installer will confirm the expected installation timeframe during your survey.

Most homes don’t need planning permission, but approval may be needed if you live in a conservation area or a listed building. In-roof panels are a great option that’s more readily approved.

Yes! While the UK electricity grid is getting greener, it’s still over 40% fossil fuels. Solar panels reduce how much power you use from the grid, plus you will export what you don’t use.

We’ll design the right system for your home and your needs, to help you achieve a quicker return on investment.

Our proposal data shows that most homes can achieve ROI within eight years, and over 40% can achieve it in as little as seven years.

Based on modelling from 157 Good Energy domestic solar proposals. Payback varies by property.  Read how we’ve worked that out here.

All Good Energy solar systems are installed using premium, sustainably sourced equipment designed to last decades.

Our systems come with long-term performance product warranties of up to 30 years on solar panels, ensuring your system continues to generate electricity reliably over its lifetime. Our Battery and Inverters come with a 10 year performance product warranty too.

This means you can install solar with confidence knowing your system is built to deliver reliable generation and long-term savings for many years.

Yes we do. You can choose one of our three Solar Care packages depending on whether you’re after an annual service, a solar panel clean, or unlimited engineer call outs.

*Solar Savings is a variable tariff, so the rates are subject to change. Solar Savings Exclusive is a 12-month export tariff available when you install solar panels and a battery with Good Energy. While the rate is subject to change to new customers, once your term begins the price is fixed for 12 months. After this time you will roll onto our standard export tariff.
