We’re thrilled to hear that the proposed Tidal Lagoon in Swansea Bay, Wales has been given the go-ahead by planners today.
This world-first project will not only help the UK to become more energy secure as a nation, it also signals fantastic news for us too!
You might remember that Good Energy led the way by announcing our investment in the project back in May 2014 – our very first investment in tidal lagoon power.
We hope to purchase 10% of the tidal lagoon’s output which will further diversify our sources of renewable electricity to supply our growing customer base.
Good Energy CEO Juliet Davenport said:
“This is truly exciting news for the UK and for Good Energy customers. This kind of renewable generation project harnesses transformational technology and lies at the heart of everything Good Energy is about, and we’re delighted that it has received the support of the government today.”
Important step towards securing the UK's energy future
Once operational, the site at Swansea Bay is projected to deliver renewable power to more than 155,000 homes in the Swansea area for over 120 years – an amazing contribution to the UK’s renewable electricity mix and the potential to be the first of many.
The site will also make an important contribution towards national carbon emission reduction targets saving over 236,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
“At Good Energy, we want a secure energy future for Britain, which is built on cleaner, greener sources of power like this. The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a truly visionary project and we’re really looking forward to following its progress of the project over the coming months.”
