Your heat pump questions answered:

Heat pumps extract heat from the outside air and use it to warm your home and hot water, even in temperatures down to -15 degrees. They run on electricity and are incredibly efficient, generating around three times more energy than they use. For a better understanding, click here for our straightforward overview.

Heat pumps are a bigger upfront investment than boilers, but with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (which we’ll apply for you), they offer very strong value for money.

Typical costs for Good Energy heat pumps (including installation) range from around £4,000 for a simple install to around £8,000 for a standard installation. More complex installs can cost up to £12,500, but we offer free, no-obligation quotes so that you can quickly rule out heat pumps if they don’t align with your budget. Learn more here.

In most cases, no.

For homes in England, air source heat pumps usually fall under ‘permitted development’, meaning you won’t need planning permission. New rules introduced in May 2025 have made it even easier to install them, especially for terraced and semi-detached homes.

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, you may still need consent, but our expert team can guide you through the process. Learn more here.

A typical installation takes around five days, with a dedicated team handling everything from new pipework to fitting your heat pump and radiators. We plan the schedule around you, keep your home tidy, and give you a full demo before we leave. And, after installation, we provide remote monitoring and ongoing support so you’re never left on your own.

If you’re curious about the full, step-by-step process, we’ve covered it in more detail in our full guide to heat pump installation.
