Good Energy has completed the UK’s first ever SMETS2 ‘three phase’ smart meter installation, making it possible for high volume and complex electricity users to join the smart, clean, green revolution.

Most UK households have what is known as a ‘single phase’ meter, connected at 230 or 240 volts via two wires — active and neutral. But there are hundreds of thousands of sites across the country that operate on a ‘three phase’ connection, connected at 400 or 415 volts by three active wires, or ‘phases’, and one neutral.

These sites have a different kind of connection because they use higher loads of electricity, and/or have a more complex set up — such as on-site generation or storage.

Until now, such sites have not been able to use the latest smart metering technology. And given the clean energy system of the future relies on these bigger sites using, generating and sharing their power as part of a smarter grid, that’s a problem we need to fix.

That’s why we are proud to be able to say that together with our smart installation partners SMS plc we have now completed the UK’s first ever second generation smart ‘three phase’ meter installation.

The energy system of the future is one in which customers don’t buy power from suppliers like us. They generate, share and store clean power. To build that future, high energy load and complex grid connections have to be smart.

The installation took place at Good Energy customer and Smart Programme Manager Emmanuel Obubuafo’s home in Gloucestershire. Tech enthusiast Emmanuel’s home has a three phase meter as he has a more complex setup with a significant 12kW solar power array, electrified heat pump heating and he is soon to install a fast charging 22kW electric vehicle charge point.

Our CEO and Founder Juliet Davenport says that “The energy system of the future is one in which customers don’t buy power from suppliers like us. They generate, share and store clean power. To build that future, high energy load and complex grid connections have to be smart.

“Like many Good Energy customers, Emmanuel is way ahead on his zero carbon journey. It is brilliant to be leading the way with this big milestone on the road to a cleaner, greener future.”
