Bob's story: an electricity bill cut in half thanks to solar energy
Key stats
📍 Location: Hampshire
✅ Set up: 20 solar panels, 6kW SolarEdge inverter, battery storage, Zappi EV charger
☀️ Projected annual generation: 7,782 kWh
📊 Projected annual savings: £1800 per year*
📊 Carbon offset: Equivalent to planting 87 trees each year
A large solar-system offering energy independence
Bob’s solar journey began in 2022 when he chose Good Energy to install a 5.68kWp solar system, comprising 16 panels and a SolarEdge inverter, as well as battery storage and a myenergi zappi EV charger.
Delighted by the early results, Bob chose to enhance his system by asking Good Energy to add four more panels and upgrade his inverter. This expanded setup now generates 7,782 kWh each year, offering even greater savings and energy independence.
Bob’s solar energy system is designed for maximum efficiency and flexibility. His integrated setup allows him to generate and store clean electricity for use throughout the day and night. The zappi charger enables Bob to power his Nissan Leaf either directly from his solar system or via a low-cost overnight tariff, offering both environmental and financial benefits. With this smart combination of solar generation, storage, and EV charging, Bob’s home is powered sustainably for much of the year.
Bob’s Hampshire solar panel installation experience
Bob was impressed not just with the system’s performance, but with the quality of the installation and service provided by Good Energy. The process was smooth, timely, and professionally handled from start to finish. He appreciated the team’s friendly and efficient approach, and was particularly pleased with the tidy workmanship that left his property looking just as good as before the install—only now powered by the sun.
Good Energy have been terrific at installing and supporting our solar power installation. The team were friendly, knowledgeable, professional and efficient and the work was completed in the timescales promised. It all looks really neat and tidy. I would thoroughly recommend them if you are thinking of getting solar panels.
Impressive solar panel savings
Thanks to his solar setup, Bob has seen a significant reduction in his energy costs. Over the past year, he managed to cut his electricity bill by 54%, while exporting nearly 2 MWh back to the grid – earning £300 through export tariffs. His EV, a Nissan Leaf, is also largely powered by solar energy, allowing him to drive without additional fuel costs during sunny periods.
I’ve been delighted with the savings. Last year I slashed my electricity bill by more than half (54%). Moreover, I exported nearly 2 MWh to the grid earning me an extra £300 in export tariffs. In addition, with my Zappi charger and the ability to go onto an overnight EV tariff, I can fill up my Nissan Leaf for free if it’s sunny enough, or else overnight for less than a tenner if not.
*Bob’s projected annual savings are based on an estimated annual generation of 7,782 kWh. This will vary slightly year to year based on solar radiance levels, but is a good indicator. Savings also rely on joining a well-paying export tariff like Good Energy’s solar savings.
