With or without a dam, energy can be harvested from rivers as they flow downhill. The flow of the water is used to spin turbines and, by extension, electrical generators.

Photovoltaic cells generate electricity by harvesting light from the sun, using the reverse of the process LEDs use to generate light. The steadily declining cost of solar panels and their high reliability have made solar a staple renewable source.

Wind turbines use moving air to turn large generators, producing electricity. The most powerful turbines available today can generate in 15–20 minutes as much electricity as a typical UK home uses each year.

This includes all energy sources that Ofgem considers renewable, e.g., wind turbines, solar panels, gas turbines burning biogas.

This is power from nuclear fission reactors. These do not emit CO₂ during operation, but nuclear plants are environmentally costly to build and create nuclear waste.

This is power generated by burning coal and using the heat to drive a turbine generator. Coal generation creates the most pollution per unit of electricity, both as CO₂ and <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/coal-ash-is-more-radioactive-than-nuclear-waste/">radioactive matter</a>.

Although CO₂ emissions are lower than when burning coal, natural gas extraction usually requires damaging hydraulic fracturing (fracking) which <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10962247.2020.1811800">can emit methane</a>, a much more environmentally damaging gas than CO₂.

This portion consists mostly of burning oil products and non-biodegradable waste.
