B Corp certification: Helping us do business better
August 2025 marks one year since Good Energy became a certified B Corp. In that time, our business has expanded in both scope and scale, and we’ve started a new chapter under new ownership, having moved away from a shareholder-owned model.
In this article, we reflect on our first year of being a B Corp, and how our certification is helping us build a more transparent, sustainable, and purposeful business right the way through.
B Corp certification has strengthened our purpose
We exist to help homes and businesses to cut carbon, which we do by buying and supplying 100% renewable power – as well as installing solar panels, heat pumps and EV chargers.
As most UK homes and businesses currently rely on gas for heating, we supply a product that is greener. 10% of our gas comes from UK-generated biogas, and the rest of the emissions are offset by investing in Gold Standard projects that support access to renewable energy in developing countries.
But in the long term, there’s no place for fossil gas in a net zero economy. Our B Corp certification has helped us to create a clear path to gradually reduce gas’s share of our profits each year – with the goal of phasing it out entirely by 2040.
B Corp certification helps us to be transparent and ethical in all that we do
Becoming a B Corp means making a commitment to do business the right way – by being transparent, ethical, and sustainable in everything we do. That includes speaking honestly, backing up our claims, and actively working to reduce our own carbon footprint. We’ve really noticed over the past year that this way of working is running deep, with our teams consistently asking how we can make decisions that benefit people and planet – not just profit.
When we became B Corp certified in 2024, we had one year to legally embed our commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact alongside profitability.
This was not possible as a public company because it was required to pass a shareholder vote by 75% and this was repeatedly blocked by our largest shareholder Ecotricity. Now we are under new ownership, we are proud to say we’ve made the change legally binding.
“The best businesses always have a purpose beyond profit. Good Energy’s has always been very clear – to give customers a meaningful way to be a part of the solution to climate change. Both an environmental and a social good. Being a B Corp cements this, and now it is embedded in our legal foundations.”
Nigel Pocklington, CEO, Good Energy
B Corp certification helps us to grow with confidence
2024 and 2025 have been years of rapid growth for Good Energy – with the acquisition of four solar businesses, and moving under new ownership ourselves too.
As we bring these businesses fully into the Good Energy brand, we’re focused on building consistent ways of working, a strong shared culture, and a workplace people are proud to be part of – all while keeping people and planet at the heart of every decision.
It’s a challenge, but a great opportunity as we head towards B Corp recertification in 2027.
B Corp certification inspires us to work closely with our local communities
A key pillar of being a B Corp is engaging with and creating positive impact in the communities we’re part of – something that’s increasingly important as we approach recertification. This year, the idea of “local” has expanded for us, with new offices in Hampshire, Lincolnshire, and Kent joining our Chippenham headquarters.
Good Energy already supports communities through local event sponsorships, partnerships with local colleges to develop green skills, and by matching employee charitable fundraising.
But we’re not stopping there. Over the next year, we plan to launch green tech workshops in schools, collaborate with local environmental groups, and host more community events to explore practical ways of cutting emissions for homes and businesses.

B Corp certification connects us with other purpose-driven businesses
One of the best things about being a B Corp is the community it connects us to: a network of like-minded businesses who are committed to putting people and planet first. We love working with other organisations who share our values, including Vintage Roots and Cornish Holiday Cottages.
“We’ve been working with Good Energy as our energy suppliers for around 20 years now. We chose them back then for being pioneering in sourcing 100% from renewables. Today we are both B Corp certified and have moved to the next level of doing business for good and are proud to continue our partnership into the future. Congratulations to Good Energy on this important milestone.” Neil Palmer, Director & Founder, Vintage Roots
“Cornish Holiday Cottages was founded on the principles of kindness, honesty and doing right back in 1978. We have always believed in looking after our environment, taking care of each other and looking after our community. Working with other B Corp certified businesses helps us stay true to those values and support others who share them. It’s a way to champion thoughtful choices and also strengthen the growing community of businesses who care.” Emily Boriosi, Managing Director, Cornish Holiday Cottages
Becoming a B Corp was never the destination – it was the start of an ongoing journey to do business better. With one year complete, we’re only just getting started. Thank you for supporting us.
