Zap Flash Tariff FAQs
- What is the Zap Flash Tariff?
The Zap Flash Tariff is a multi-rate tariff with one flash period per week.
- What is the flash period?
The ‘flash period’ is a weekly 4-hour flash of FREE electricity, based on times when there is surplus renewable energy feeding the national grid.
In Summer (1 April 2021 – 30 September 2021) the flash period will be: 11am-3pm
In Winter (1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022) the flash period will be: 11pm-3am
The flash period will always be the same as above, but the day of the week it falls on can change. Our energy trading team will use their weather forecasts to identify the best day for the week ahead. For example, the sunniest days during summer and the windiest days during winter.
- How do you know electricity is going to be greener at those times of day?
Week in, week out, our experienced energy trading team forecast how much electricity our community of renewable generators will produce based on weather reports. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years. The flash periods (11am-3pm in Spring/Summer and 11pm-3am in Autumn/Winter) have been carefully chosen because they’re typically times of high renewable generation.
That being said, we are forecasting flash days a week in advance and the weather can change quickly. Rest assured that we’re doing our best to be as flexible as possible and intend to refine the tariff based on customer feedback.
- Does the flash period only apply to the electricity used to charge my EV?
No – all the electricity you use at home during the 4-hour flash period is free. By enabling you to save on your bill by shifting your electricity usage to greener times of day, we can help make the most of power from renewable sources.
- How does Good Energy decide what day the flash period will be on each week?
Our energy trading team decides the best day for the flash period for the week ahead based on the weather forecast.
- How will I know when the flash period will be each week?
All Zap Flash customers will receive a ‘flash signal’ email every Saturday to confirm the day for their 4-hour flash period for that coming week.
- How soon after signing up to Zap Flash will I start receiving flash signals?
It usually takes 2-3 weeks to switch you over to Good Energy from your existing energy supplier. We will then need to collect between two- and four-days’ worth of half-hourly readings from your smart meter. We will email you to confirm this process and keep you up to date.
If we don’t contact you and you still haven’t received your first flash signal one month after signing up with Good Energy, please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, remembering to include your energy account number in your message.
- How will I see the Zap Flash discount on my bill?
We will apply a monthly credit to your account to cover your usage during the free flash periods. This will be listed on your statement as a monetary amount next to a credit code called FLASH_CREDIT. E.g. if you receive statements monthly you will see a credit for electricity used during 4x4-hour flash periods that month, up to a total of 16 hours.
- Can I use the flash period for anything other than charging an electric car?
Absolutely! You can make the most of your free electricity during your weekly flash periods for charging your EV, or simply charging devices and setting the dishwasher or washing machine to come on. In addition to the flash period, you will also have 7 hours off-peak electricity every day from midnight to 7am, with a lower ‘off peak’ unit rate to take advantage of.
- Am I eligible for the flash tariff?
- You will need sign up through our online only onboarding journey to switch to Zap Flash.
- You must consent to pay your bills by Direct Debit and set up an online account with Good Energy.
- You must already have a SMETS2 smart meter (or a SMETS1 meter that has been ‘upgraded’ to work like a SMETS2 meter) and give your consent for us to take half hourly readings from your smart meter.
- How do I know if I have a SMETS2 meter?
- SMETS2 meters are second generation smart meters.
- The rollout of second-generation smart meters began in 2018. If your meter was installed before then, it’s likely to be a first generation or traditional meter, not a SMETS2 meter.
- The easiest way to tell is to look at your electricity meter.
- If the serial number starts with 19P, this indicates it's a SMETS1 meter.
- If it starts with 19M, then this means it’s SMETS2.
However, to be 100% sure, the best way to find out which type you have is to contact the supplier that installed it.
- How do I know if I have an upgraded SMETS1 meter?
SMETS1 meters lose their smart functionality when you switch away from the supplier that installed it for you. Energy suppliers are working on remotely upgrading SMETS1 meters so that they stay smart when you switch. You should have been told by your current supplier if your meter has been upgraded, so the best thing to do is check with them.
- I’ve signed up and realised I don’t have a SMETS2 meter. What happens now?
At the moment, we can only accept SMETS2 meters on the Zap Flash tariff. If you’ve applied and you have a traditional meter or SMETS1 meter that hasn’t been upgraded, our team will contact you to talk you through your options.
- Is there a Gas tariff?
Yes! If you would like to have both fuels with us, please select gas as well as electricity when you sign up. But please bear in mind that there is no ‘flash period’ applied to your gas tariff, only to the electricity. Your gas tariff will have the same great rates as our latest fixed product and is carbon neutral as standard (10% renewable biogas, with 90% offset by investing in green energy projects worldwide).
- Can I have 100% renewable electricity from Good energy and get gas from another supplier?
Of course. You just need to choose ‘electricity only’ when signing up on the online onboarding journey.
- Is Zap Flash a fixed rate tariff?
Yes. On the Zap Flash tariff, your rates are fixed until 30 April 2022. This means your unit rates and standing charges stay the same for the duration of the contract, giving you the security that your gas unit rates, peak and off-peak electricity unit rates and standing charges won’t change for c. 1 year. 45 days from the end of your contract, we'll get in contact with the cheapest and most relevant available tariff for you to move onto. Good Energy tariffs - including Zap Flash - don’t have any exit fees, so you can change tariffs or switch suppliers at any time with no penalties.
- Is this a trial tariff?
Yes, and it’s the first of its kind in the UK! We are launching this product to test if it meets the needs of EV drivers and would appreciate your support with helping us improve it for the future. - I don’t have an EV but still want this, can I have it?
The tariff is designed to enable greener, cheaper charging for EV drivers. However, if you don’t have an EV you’re still welcome to join. It’s just worth being aware that, as you won’t use as much electricity as someone charging an EV, you won’t see as big a benefit from using the free flash periods.
- The Winter flash period timings are in the middle of the night – how can I make the most of them?
If your EV charger has an in-built timer, you can set it to come on during the flash period. Other appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers may also have timers or delay functions so you can set them to come on during your cheaper off-peak hours and flash periods. You could also buy timer plugs to help make it easier to charge devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops during set hours.
