Public invited to find out more about plans for Delabole solar farm

People in Delabole are being invited to a public exhibition to find out more about plans for a solar farm next to Cornwall’s first commercial wind farm.

Renewable energy supplier Good Energy, which has owned Delabole wind farm since 2002, is planning to build a 3MW solar farm that would generate enough renewable electricity to power around 740 average homes.

The solar farm would be specially designed with 17 metre gaps between the rows of solar panels rather than the usual five or six metres so that the land, which is currently used for growing silage, can continue to be used for agriculture.

It would also use the same grid connection already used by Delabole wind farm, making the most of available space on the electricity grid.

Good Energy would also contribute a minimum of £1,000 per MW of installed capacity to a new community fund each year for the lifetime of the solar farm. The fund would be controlled by local people and used to support community initiatives. This would be in addition to the existing wind farm community fund, which currently pays more than £9,000 per year towards local good causes.

There will be a public exhibition setting out the proposals on Friday 21stAugust at Delabole Methodist Church from 3pm to 7.30pm. More information and a feedback form are also available online.

James Ryle from Good Energy said: “Since buying Delabole Wind Farm in 2002, Good Energy has worked closely with the landowners and the wider community to maximise the potential of the site for renewable electricity generation, while supporting existing farming activity and delivering significant benefits to the local community.

“The solar farm has been carefully designed to fit into the landscape and so that the land can remain in productive use. We hope that local people will come along to the exhibition and give us their views before we prepare a planning application.”

Good Energy has sent letters to 400 Delabole households with information about the project and the public exhibition, and has left leaflets and feedback forms in the Delabole Spar shop.
