FlexiRewards: Earn money by flexing your energy use 

Sign up online by visiting the FlexiRewards platform. Create an account and tell us a bit about your battery or heat pump to enable us to communicate with it. 

You’ll need a battery or a heat pump to take part in FlexiRewards. You must have had your heat pump or battery installed by Good Energy or an installer that’s part of the Good Energy Group, such as Wessex ECOEnergy and JPS Renewables. We’ll have contacted you by email if you’re eligible to take part. As this is a trial, we are only offering this to a limited number of customers. 

No, you don’t need a smart meter to join FlexiRewards. You only need an eligible and connected heat pump or home battery. 

No, you don’t need to have your electricity supplied by Good Energy to take part. If you’re interested in doing more to make Britain’s energy grid greener, check out our 100% renewable electricity tariffs. 

No, If you are already opted in to a flexibility scheme, we wont be able to enrol you. You will need to opt out with the other provider first. 

Yes! You simply start earning rewards by connecting your eligible heat pump or battery. 

No, you can currently only sign up with one, either your battery or your heat pump.

You will earn financial rewards for each month we are able to use your heat pump or home battery in a flexibility event. 

We’ll automatically adjust your energy usage during an event – once you’re signed up there’s nothing more you need to do to take part. However, we’ll always notify you of an upcoming event so you can opt out if you wish.  

We’ll automatically adjust your battery and heat pump status when the grid operator informs us that the grid is under pressure. If you don’t wish to take part in an individual event, you can opt out, and you can also override any commands sent to your heat pump or battery. If you opt out or override commands, you will not earn from that flexibility event.  

This will often be at times of peak demand in the early evening, but can be any time of day. Events will typically last between 30 minutes and 3 hours. 

When we adjust your heat pump or battery, we’ll typically pause or lower its usage while the grid is strained (typically between 4pm and 8pm), or schedule it to run to soak up excess power (typically in the middle of the day). 

We’ll send you an email each month your battery or heat pump will be used to support the grid.

We’ll adjust your battery or heat pump schedule as necessary and then reset it immediately after the event. You can also adjust your schedule if it doesn’t suit your needs. 

We only export from your battery when we’re confident that the amount we’ll pay you is higher than the price of using electricity from the grid. We collect your tariff details when you sign up for this reason to make sure you will always earn more by participating in FlexiRewards. 

No. The great thing about FlexiRewards is that we take care of all the hard work for you. We’ll continue to charge up and export from your battery to earn you money. If you have a heat pump, the majority of the events will be ‘turn down’ events where we pause your heat pump from running, so you won’t have to worry about us unnecessarily heating your home whilst you’re away.  

In the FlexiRewards platform you’ll be able to see how we’ve flexed your energy and see how much you’ve earned. Each month we’ll send you a link to view your earnings and cash them out.

We’ll add your rewards to your FlexiRewards account before the end of each month. You can cash out your rewards when your total balance exceeds £10. 

Grid operators pay for help with keeping the grid running smoothly. This can be turning down devices when there’s a lack of energy, or turning them up when there’s more renewable energy than we can store! If you have a battery, grid operators will also reward you for exporting energy to your neighbours when the grid is running short of energy. This project also receives funding from the LATENT research project at the University of Southampton. 

FlexiRewards is a trial and will run for 6 months initially. 

Britain’s energy grid includes more renewable electricity than ever. However, it sometimes needs to use back-up gas power stations when demand on the grid is particularly high. The aim with FlexiRewards and similar schemes is to avoid the need to turn on so many polluting back-up generators to meet peak demand.  

The more flexible we can be with how we use electricity, the better we’ll get at making the most of renewable energy sources. Helping cut ties with polluting fossil fuels, and creating a cleaner, greener energy grid for everyone.

If you participate in FlexiRewards, we will share your data with our partners Axle to enable us to automatically flex your energy usage. If you participate with a heat pump, we’ll also share your  data with the University of Southampton to benefit from their expertise in energy research and innovation. The exact amount you receive will depend on whether you have a battery or a heat pump, how frequently the grid requires you to adjust your energy usage, and whether you are a high or low consumer of energy. You’ll be able to see how much you’re earning on the FlexiRewards platform. Monthly earnings aren’t guaranteed.
