It&#8217;s targeted at eight key growth sectors, including advanced manufacturing, aerospace, chemicals, and clean energy supply chains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government estimates around 10,000 businesses across Great Britain could be eligible. This isn&#8217;t limited to the largest organisations &#8211; SMEs qualify too, provided they meet the criteria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify, businesses must:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">Operate in one of the scheme&#8217;s eight target sectors &#8211; either as a manufacturing &#8216;frontier&#8217; business, or as a foundational business central to the supply chain, and manufacture eligible products\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">Meet the qualifying electricity-intensity threshold, assessed at sector level rather than business level\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">Have annual electricity consumption above 33 MWh, with over 25% of site use relating to eligible manufacturing activity\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">Be registered with Companies House\u00a0<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is--inner-block\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/british-industrial-competitiveness-scheme-business-guidance\/british-industrial-competitiveness-scheme-guidance-for-applicants\">See the full guidance for applicants<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-apply-for-bics-support\" class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-typestyle-h3\">How do I apply for BICS support?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you believe your business is eligible for BICS support, you can apply directly through the government&#8217;s online application service. Applications opened on 1 October 2026 and will close on 30 November 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll need details of your manufacturing sites and electricity consumption, along with supporting evidence. You can also use the government&#8217;s eligibility checker before applying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"cta-bar wp-block has-dark-grey-background-color has-background alignwide\">\n        <div class=\"cta-bar__inner\">\n                    <h2 id=\"bics-is-now-open-to-applicants\" class=\"cta-bar__heading\">BICS is now open to applicants<\/h2>        \n                    <div class=\"cta-bar__content\">\n                    <a href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-bics.service.gov.uk\/start\"  class=\"g-button\">\n                        <span class=\"link__text\">\n            Apply now        <\/span>\n            <\/a>\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-does-bics-work-and-how-much-could-businesses-save\" class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-typestyle-h3\">How does BICS work, and how much could businesses save?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BICS exempts eligible businesses from paying the following levies, currently recovered through electricity bills:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">The Renewables Obligation (RO)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">Feed-in Tariffs (FIT)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"is--inner-block\">The Capacity Market (CM)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Government estimates suggest this could reduce eligible businesses&#8217; electricity costs by around \u00a335\u2013\u00a340\/MWh &#8211; bill savings of up to 25% for some manufacturers. The RO and FIT exemptions take effect from April 2027, with the Capacity Market exemption following from October 2027.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eligible businesses may also &nbsp;be entitled to a one-off payment reflecting the support they&#8217;d have received had the scheme been running since April 2026. Details of how and when this will be delivered are still to be confirmed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-body-l has-brand-yellow-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83d\udcca Could bills come down further?<\/strong>\u00a0<br>BICS could cut costs by up to \u00a340\/MWh for eligible manufacturers \u2014 but it only reaches a subset of UK businesses. In our report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/insights\/what-does-it-take-to-lower-business-energy-bills-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rewiring the Market: How to Tackle the Hidden Causes of High Energy Bills<\/em><\/a>, we set out reforms that could cut electricity costs by 31% (\u00a373\/MWh) for all non-domestic users, not just BICS-eligible sectors.\u00a0<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/insights\/what-does-it-take-to-lower-business-energy-bills-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the report \u2192<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-will-the-bics-scheme-be-funded\" class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-typestyle-h3\">How will the BICS scheme be funded?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government says BICS won&#8217;t directly increase bills for other consumers. Instead, the costs removed from eligible manufacturers&#8217; bills are expected to be offset through a mix of: changes elsewhere in the energy system (such as amended inflation-indexation for the RO and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/insights\/what-fit-payment-changes-mean-for-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FIT schemes)<\/a>; removal of Carbon Price Support from April 2028; and Exchequer funding. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"should-the-government-go-further-to-bring-down-energy-bills\" class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-typestyle-h3\">Should the government go further to bring down energy bills?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-body-l wp-block-paragraph\">BICS is one of the most significant interventions yet in tackling the UK&#8217;s electricity cost problem.
