The government is expected to prioritise installing solar panels on schools clustered in areas with high levels of social need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is--inner-block wp-block-paragraph\">At least 10 schools will be selected from each region, including one further education college which will work closely with the solar installer to promote careers in renewable technologies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hospitals are being selected through an expression of interest process, run by the NHS.&nbsp;The first solar panels are expected to be on schools and hospitals by the end of summer 2025. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-will-solar-panels-positively-impact-schools-and-hospitals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How will solar panels positively impact schools and hospitals?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduced energy costs<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools and hospitals have been hit particularly hard by rising energy costs. The NHS is the single biggest energy user in the public sector; and has seen its energy bills double since 2019 to an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/great-british-energy-to-cut-bills-for-hospitals-and-schools\">\u00a31.4 billion a year<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government estimates that the proposed solar panel installations could save selected schools up to \u00a325,000 a year and selected hospitals up to \u00a345,000 a year \u2013 totalling around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/great-british-energy-to-cut-bills-for-hospitals-and-schools\">\u00a3400 million of cost savings over 30 years<\/a>. These cost savings can then be reinvested back into vital teaching and healthcare services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental impact<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solar panels generate 100% renewable power, helping to reduce reliance on electricity from the national grid. For schools and hospitals, this is an important step in contributing to the UK\u2019s broader climate goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educational value<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools with solar panels can use the systems as teaching tools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/blog\/eco-home\/\">educating students about renewable energy<\/a>, sustainability and the green economy.
