The big question was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/50591261\">how many do we need<\/a>, and how are they paid for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CCC has now made a recommendation on both counts. We need 90-120 million planted per year, and they should be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/jan\/23\/make-big-polluters-pay-for-mass-tree-planting-officials-say\">paid for with carbon levies on the UK\u2019s biggest polluters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible for individuals and businesses to get involved with tree planting too \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/plant-trees\/large-scale-planting\/\">the Woodland Trust have some great advice for the UK<\/a>&nbsp;and our partner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sizeofwales.org.uk\/\">Size of Wales work internationally<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-1024x373.webp\" alt=\"Land\" class=\"wp-image-176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-1024x373.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-300x109.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-768x280.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-1536x560.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514-1500x547.webp 1500w, https:\/\/www.goodenergy.co.uk\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/pexels-olga-lioncat-7244514.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"peatlands\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peatlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK\u2019s peatlands store around 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon, and we get 70% of our drinking water from peatland river catchments, so it\u2019s easy to see why they are important. Yet 80% of the country\u2019s peatlands are currently in poor condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CCC recommends restoring at least 50% of upland and 25% of lowland peatlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an individual, some of the actions you can take are to only buy peat free compost for your garden and ensure the plants you buy are in peat free soil. Our partners at The Soil Association are the experts in this area.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soilassociation.org\/news\/2020\/january\/23\/nature-must-be-more-central-in-new-climate-change-committee-report\/?utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=social_organic&amp;utm_campaign=news_proactive&amp;utm_content=ccc_report_2020\">Policy Director Jo Lewis said of the report<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cTo join the dots between climate, nature and land degradation, government must support all farms to transition to agroecological farming methods, pioneered by organic farmers, which work with nature and minimise chemical reliance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report also points to clean energy generation as routes for farmers to decarbonise. Solar power can function in harmony with other land uses, whilst use of waste in anaerobic digestion is a route for capturing harmful methane emissions \u2014&nbsp;both of which many Good Energy generators are doing today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"bioenergy-crops\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bioenergy crops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another fuel source for anaerobic digestion are energy crops, most commonly maize. A sometimes controversial topic, as significant land use for this purpose can lead to \u2018monocrops\u2019 which have a negative impact on biodiversity, the CCC recommends expanding land use for them by 23,000 hectares per year. The reasons cited are that the crops can be grown more quickly than trees, helping us reduce emissions in the timespan we need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also recommendations placing restrictions of imports of fuels for biomass from other countries \u2014&nbsp;a crucial step to take if this form of power generation is going to be operated sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good Energy priotises buying power from anaerobic digestion generators which use waste, but where energy crops are used we ensure they are used sustainably. Anaerobic digestion is a complimentary technology to use alongside variable renewables like wind and solar, as it provides a clean source of power which can be relied upon even when the sun doesn\u2019t shine and the wind doesn\u2019t blow. It can also be dialed up and down as required \u2014&nbsp;unlike nuclear. It is good to see the CCC do the research on how this technology fits into a low carbon future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"is--inner-block wp-block-paragraph\">action from government is needed quickly if we are to reap the rewards<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is--inner-block wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014Lord Deben, Chairman, The Committee on Climate Change<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"food-waste-and-meat-reduction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food waste and meat reduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the area that is most focused on individual action, and which is receiving most of the headlines today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CCC\u2019s original net zero 2050 report did point to a reduction in meat consumption across the UK \u2014&nbsp;notable for not advocating an absolute conversion to vegan or vegetarianism. This report puts a figure on that reduction \u2014&nbsp;20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also advocates for addressing the 13.6 million tonnes of food that is wasted in the UK. Its recommendations include short term target setting and using \u2018nudge theory\u2019 to encourage consumers. Food waste collection also plays a part, and it is worth noting that food waste can also be an effective fuel source for anaerobic digestion \u2014&nbsp;further evidence that we must have a \u2018whole systems\u2019 approach to decarbonizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theccc.org.uk\/publication\/land-use-policies-for-a-net-zero-uk\/\">The full CCC report is available to read here<\/a>.
