While the company had grown and evolved since its founding in 1959, much of its infrastructure dated back decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Managing Director Stuart Yalden, an investment in modernisation offered two new opportunities:<br><br>&#8211; <strong>Reducing operational energy costs<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>&#8211; <strong>Improving the company\u2019s environmental impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than jumping straight into renewable generation, the business took a step back and asked a more fundamental question: how could they use less energy in the first place?&nbsp;This led to a&nbsp;factory-wide&nbsp;modernisation programme. GW Martin upgraded electrical systems, replaced outdated&nbsp;plant and&nbsp;infrastructure, and switched from fluorescent lighting to LED&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;significantly reducing&nbsp;their&nbsp;overall consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even with these improvements,&nbsp;their&nbsp;energy&nbsp;bill&nbsp;remained&nbsp;a major operational cost. Over time, GW Martin&nbsp;has&nbsp;installed solar in phases:<br><strong>&#8211; 50kW <\/strong>installation in 2013<br><strong>&#8211; 100kW<\/strong> installation&nbsp;in&nbsp;2014&nbsp;<br><strong>&#8211; 90kW<\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;2024&nbsp;following a roof replacement&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the site has a total of&nbsp;<strong>240kW of solar generation capacity<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impact: \u00a375,000 saved every year<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefits of solar&nbsp;panels for this manufacturer&nbsp;are far reaching:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lower costs and improved profitability:&nbsp;<\/strong>By generating&nbsp;a significant proportion&nbsp;of its own electricity, GW Martin has reduced its reliance on grid energy, saving around \u00a375,000 a year in energy costs.&nbsp;\u201cWe\u2019re more profitable&nbsp;thanks to our solar panels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Greater energy resilience:&nbsp;<\/strong>With a consistent daytime load, the business is well suited to solar generation&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;allowing it to maximise on-site usage and reduce exposure to market volatility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A stronger commercial story:&nbsp;<\/strong>As sustainability becomes a growing priority across manufacturing supply chains, GW Martin\u2019s investment is increasingly valuable in customer conversations.<em>&nbsp;\u201cOur solar panels are&nbsp;definitely opening&nbsp;doors&nbsp;to new customers. I really enjoy bringing clients into our factory and showing how our operations are powered by solar.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a&nbsp;really powerful&nbsp;differentiator&nbsp;for us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Progress towards Net Zero electricity:&nbsp;<\/strong>Today, around 30% of GW Martin\u2019s electricity is generated on-site, with the remaining 70% sourced&nbsp;by a 100% renewable electricity tariff&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;making the business\u2019 electricity emissions zero carbon.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice to other manufacturers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With rising energy costs and increasing pressure from customers around sustainability,&nbsp;Stuart\u2019s message to other manufacturers is simple:c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you own the building,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a no-brainer.
