We’ve worked together since 2019 to help Good Energy customers to join the smart revolution – gaining insights on their household energy usage and helping the whole grid to become greener and more efficient.

With both companies’ values rooted in sustainability and using technology advancements to make our world a greener place, SMS were a natural choice of partner for our smart meter roll out.

When will you first hear from SMS?

SMS will contact you via email, text or phone when they have engineers available in your area to install your smart meter.

If you’re looking to get a smart meter but haven’t yet been contacted about local installations, simply register your interest and someone from SMS will be in touch.

What training does a smart meter engineer have?

Fully qualified engineers receive an induction at SMS’ Bolton Academy, which includes trade tests for both gas and electric meter exchanges, Mocopa and NAS assessment. They also receive guidance on giving tailored energy efficiency advice along with the Energy Saving Trust App.

Being able to provide excellent customer service is really important – so this is a vital skill covered at the training academy too.

What does a day in the life of a SMS engineer look like?

We chat with Danny, one of the engineers at SMS, about what his typical day looks like.

My day starts around 8am with a black coffee and some toast before I head off to the area I’ll be installing in that day. With engineers based all over the country, this is normally under a one hour drive.

On a normal day, I will install smart meters at 3‐4 houses all within the same area. You’ll recognise me from my branded van, uniform and badge – and you can also set a password at booking for extra peace of mind.

I’ll call you on the way to your house, to give an ETA .

I will quickly access the location of your meter and make sure your home is suitable for having a smart meter installed.

Next I’ll explain how the installation works before getting on with the job. This typically takes up to one hour per meter, so I will be with you for up to two hours if you are a duel fuel customer.

You can ask me questions, but I do need to concentrate fully on the job in hand, particularly when I’m carrying out safety critical gas and electrical work. I really enjoy meeting new people, as well as the challenge of upgrading the customer’s installation.
