For almost 100 years, the Good Housekeeping Institute has been a trusted source for the best and most reliable products in the consumer market.

Not everyone receives its sought-after endorsement. The Good Housekeeping Institute has a strict testing process, and their experts provide recommendations to consumers off the back of this, on everything from food recipes to freezers.

And now the Good Housekeeping Institute has turned its attention to sustainability and the energy market.

Since 2019, the GHI has been acknowledging the positive steps forward companies are taking to aid and protect our environment with its ‘Getting Greener’ endorsement. The Good Housekeeping Institute has verified and accredited initiatives such as reducing plastic waste, sustainable packaging, or making eco-friendly mattresses.

After a rigorous period of testing, Good Energy is being announced as the first energy company to be approved as a verified “100% renewable electricity provider” by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

This is a really important recognition of everything Good Energy stands for and has been practising in the energy market for 20 years.

Receiving the Good Housekeeping Institute’s coveted Getting Greener endorsement is another way of showing people what we do is different.

Since 1999, we have been working to grow the market for small-scale and independent renewable generators in the UK. 20 years ago, wind and solar farms were a niche technology and many people thought they wouldn’t amount to anything. Those times have changed, and renewables are now a key part of our new and future clean energy system.

When the company first started our CEO and Founder, Juliet Davenport, recognised the role of a purpose-led energy company, willing to buy renewable electricity from farmers, small businesses, or community owned projects. Then and now, the big suppliers weren’t interested as these generators are too small, or buying their energy doesn’t earn them large sums of money.

Good Energy now has over 2000 generators which rely on us to take their energy and pay them a fair price for it. It’s what we’ve done for years – alongside our own renewable projects and supporting consumers invest in their own clean tech, such as roof-top solar panels, or heat pumps.

We know not all suppliers have the same high standards. The energy market is full of companies which offer “100% renewable” tariffs, but don’t actually buy any renewable power. We’ve been working hard to raise public awareness of the problem of greenwashing and we’re making progress.

If you want to offer customers a genuinely green tariff, you have to do more than just buy second-hand certificates. Receiving the Good Housekeeping Institute’s coveted Getting Greener endorsement is another way of showing people what we do is different.
