Celebrating our wind farm’s second birthday!

We’re never ones to pass up on a celebration here at Good Energy.

So with our Hampole wind farm near Doncaster recently turning two, we wanted to mark the occasion in our own unique way.

Winda-who?

The turbines at Hampole started spinning back in April 2014 and have since generated enough cleaner, greener electricity to power almost 10,000 homes.

Local residents have shown great support for the project – and to say thank you we recently opened the gates for a very special tour of the wind farm.

As part of the celebrations, we held an exciting ceremony: the naming of the turbines!

Following some fantastic suggestions from pupils at All Saints primary school in Hooton Pagnell, the winning names – Windiana, Airy Fairy, Windaloo and Windy Wayne – were chosen after a very close public vote.

Old boilers, broken bells and community flowerbeds

St Michael & All Angels Church in Skelbrooke is one of the first projects to benefit from the grant, with the church’s heating system and boiler soon to be repaired.

Ruth Roche, church warden at St Michael’s, is thrilled. “We’re delighted by this news and very grateful for Good Energy’s support” she told us.

“We have struggled with our ancient boiler for years and suffered many church services and parish meetings with no heating. The upgrade will allow us to offer heated premises to not only the congregation but, for the first time, the entire community!”

Supporting a renewable future

It’s really great to get input from the communities close to Hampole. We see them as the custodians of the wind farm, which is why it was wonderful to welcome them to the site today.

It’s our hope that by organising visits like these we can bring people closer towards understanding where their energy comes from, why we should value it more, and why we should use it less.
