Costs & savings

renewable energy doesn’t cost the earth - it is helping to save it.

What are our electricity prices?

For the average customer the additional cost of powering their home with 100% green electricity from Good Energy is around £1 a week. That’s less than a pint of beer (in Chippenham).

The average annual saving is 2 tonnes of C02 from an average household footprint of 6 tonnes.
And that’s exactly why we started a zero-carbon electricity company … we wanted to make a big difference.

Reducing your bill

Our staff and many customers have found that the higher electricity prices can easily be outweighed by reduced usage. In fact, it has highlighted the importance of reducing waste. Simply buying and using an energy monitor can save you between 10% and 20%. Energy efficient bulbs could be worth another 10%. And there is plenty more - take a look at how to reduce your bill.

We offer many different products online at the Good Energy Shop and our advisors are trained to help in every way they can.

Why does Good Energy cost more?

Our electricity prices are a result of the additional environmental benefits we provide and the work we are doing to promote and grow renewables in the UK:

  • We only supply 100% renewable electricity. Nuclear, gas and oil are cheaper but a lot dirtier
  • We support independent green generators by buying the electricity we supply you, from them
  • We go beyond the government’s legal requirements on ROCs (technical but important)
  • We are committed to the environment and campaign actively for change from inside the energy industry

This is not greenwash - but don’t take our word for it - the National Consumer Council stated, in their 2007 independent report on green electricity, Reality or Rhetoric? :

“…these additional environmental benefits are tangible and account for the premium Good Energy charges … For those consumers who want a green electricity supply, pure and simple, this is probably the closest they will get to it”.

The average customer pays around four to five hundred pounds per year on electricity. Good Energy is about 9% more expensive than market average. We don’t like it - it makes our mission tougher. Our aim is to bring this premium down further. We would like to be cheaper than dirty energy but we need your help getting there. So, if you want to make a difference, join us.
