Portishead Community Lido biomass installation

Portishead pool

Portishead Community Trust open air pool is going green thanks to a new biomass boiler, funded by Good Energy customers under our commitment to the independent Green Energy Supply scheme.

Currently each swimmer needs the equivalent of a litre of oil in heating costs but the new boiler enables the pool’s fossil fuel usage to be cut by 80%. The locally–sourced wood pellets are almost carbon neutral, and buying the fuel supports UK producers while reducing fossil fuel imports.

David Coombes, Chairman of Portishead Community Trust, said "This is a great development for the pool, enabling us to replace ageing equipment, save on heating costs, and significantly reduce our carbon footprint. We are delighted that Good Energy has chosen Portishead Pool as one of its community renewable heat projects.”

Juliet Davenport, CEO of Good Energy, added: "People using Portishead Pool can now be confident that their swim is a low-carbon swim! By switching from oil to biomass, Portishead Pool will be saving over 2000 tonnes of carbon and helping the UK on a pathway to a 100% renewable future."

And it doesn’t stop with the pool – when the Renewable Heat Incentive comes in we’re planning to entrust the income the boiler generates to an independent body to invest in further renewable heat projects, creating a continuing stream of carbon savings.
