SmartGen rewards large domestic and small commercial renewable generators that produce significantly more electricity than they use on site. We pay generators on SmartGen for the excess electricity they export back to the local electricity grid and for the ‘greeness’ of their power (known as ROCs).
We set up SmartGen in 2005 because renewable generators between 5 – 75kW were struggling to find buyers for their electricity. The price we pay you is based on the current market rate for electricity and renewable certificates, ensuring you get always get a competitive deal.
How does SmartGen work?
Like our other schemes, we keep it simple. To join SmartGen you need to:
- Choose your renewable generator and get it installed.
- Have an export meter installed. We can help you with this - just ask.
- Export at least the minimum export threshold over the course of a year.
Once you’re signed up with us you’ll need to:
- Send us a meter reading every month telling us how much electricity you have exported.
- Send us a reading from your Total Generation Meter which tells us how many ROCs and REGOs you have produced.

By the way…
- We pay you for your export (including LECs) each quarter.
- You don’t have to buy electricity from Good Energy to join SmartGen.
- ROCs & REGOs vouch for the ‘greeness’ of the electricity. We will pay you for these based on the total generation meter readings you give us. Please note that a minimum number of issued ROCs must be transferred to Good Energy in a single batch before we can pay you for them.
- For installing an export meter on your behalf, and for administering your export we pass on to you an annual charge.
