As well as renewable electricity, we are committed to supporting renewable heat. Three-quarters of UK homes rely on gas for heating & cooking - this accounts for 14.5% of UK CO2 emissions. Systems for creating renewable heat at home can reduce this figure dramatically.
Over 80,000 people across the country have installed solar thermal panels to produce their own heat energy. We want to encourage thousands more to do the same and this is why we have introduced Good Energy HotROCS, the UK’s first Renewable Heat Incentive.
How does HotROCs work?
HotROCs is a groundbreaking scheme that pays domestic solar generators money for the heat energy they produce. By working out the angle and orientation of your installation, your geographical latitude and the capacity of your solar thermal panels, we can estimate the amount of heat you will produce and then pay you for it!
Where’s the catch?
There’s no catch, just a requirement that you sign up to Good Energy’s 100% renewable electricity supply, and Good Energy’s gas supply if you’re a gas user. We fund the scheme through the premium we charge to Good Energy Gas customers. Our customers asked us to supply gas but we wanted to ensure that if we supplied a fossil fuel, it would be as part of an initiative that would ultimately promote and support the growth of renewable generation in the UK - and that is exactly what we are doing with HotROCs.
We see Good Energy HotROCs as a stepping stone to a renewable future. The scheme is leading the way and we are confident other energy suppliers will follow our example and introduce similar schemes, and that Government will use our innovation to help shape the UK’s renewable heat policy. It happened with our HomeGen scheme so why not HotROCs!
