THE GLEN LYN STORY
Glen Lyn Gorge is located in the centre of Lynmouth village where two rivers, the East and West Lyn, converge. Hydro electricity was being generated in the East Lyn Valley as far back as 1898, but it was in 1983 when the Oxenham family undertook the project. Thanks to their efforts, the project now generates a maximum of 320kW of renewable electricity.
The gorge is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) which is a testament to the sustainability of hydro power. Like Delabole, you are very welcome to visit the Glen Lyn hydro station and we encourage you to do so as it is outstandingly beautiful. Matthew Oxenham’s talks on renewables and climate change are fascinating, as is the renewable technology education centre.
