Choosing your technology
Once you've made the decision to become a generator, the next step is to select the right renewable energy technology for your home.
There is a growing number of technologies entering the market and it can be challenging to identify which is the most suitable. You may, for example, have your heart set on a wind turbine, but there is a chance it might not be appropriate for your situation.
To help you make the best choice, we have created a detailed assessment survey to help our team of experts work out which technology will work well for you. Before you do that, it's worth having a look at the basic requirements for each technology;
Solar photovoltaic (PV)

- South, south-east, or south-west facing available area
- No casting shade for large proportions of the day
- At least 10m² of available space
Solar thermal

- South, south-east, or south-west facing (ideally with a 45 degree tilt) available area
- A compatible boiler/hot water system
- An available space of at least 2.5m²
Wind turbine

- West facing
- A wind speed of over 4.5m/s at 10m above ground level
- No obstacles within 50m of the site and the westerly wind
Heat pump

- For this technology your key requirements fundamentally depend on which type you choose to install. For example, if you select a ground-source heat pump, these work best with under-floor heating, air-sourced heat pumps, however, work well with radiator heating systems.
- We would always recommend making sure your property is well insulated before you think about installing a heat pump.
