Benefits for the community
There are a wealth of benefits community renewable energy projects can bring; here are just a few
An income from selling your energy
Regardless of the size of your generation project, you can make an income for your community through Good Energy’s energy purchase products. Many community energy projects choose to use this income to finance projects that are beneficial to the whole community, so everyone benefits from the community energy project.
Reduced/free electricity costs
If your scheme is registered on the Government Feed-in Tariff, you get dual benefits from generating your own. Not only do you get paid for electricity you generate and export to the grid, but you can also reduce local electricity bills by using the electricity you generate at the site.
Possibility of local employment
There is a need for expertise at all stages of the development, but it is likely that paid local work will primarily feature in the construction phase of the project. Using local contractors for the building of foundations and site preparation will boost the local economy; however, sourcing the actual renewable technology locally is very unlikely due to a lack of UK based manufacturers.
Potential reduction in the carbon footprint of the community
Generating your own renewable energy reduces your communites’ dependence on grid electricity and the fossil fuels that go along with it. We also find that once you start generating your own energy you become more aware of the energy you use and reduce your overall energy consumption – reducing both your carbon footprint and your electricity bill.
