What is the Feed-in Tariff?

The Feed-in Tariff (FIT) is a payment made to those choosing to generate their own renewable electricity. Once registered, you're entitled to a sum of money for every unit of electricity you generate – even if you use it on site – and a further sum for the units that you export to the grid.

Introduced by the Government in April 2010 to encourage more renewable energy generation in the UK, the Feed-in Tariff has been a huge success.

How does the Feed-in Tariff work?

Under the Feed-in Tariff scheme you are paid for all your renewable electricity generation, regardless of whether you use the electricity or not. You need to work with a Feed-in Tariff administrator like Good Energy to process your payments under the scheme, the diagram below shows how this works.
