In its most basic form, a smart meter is one that allows your meter to be read remotely, rather than by a person.

The new smart meters planned for nationwide roll out between 2012 and 2020 are designed to provide more than just remote meter readings.  Here are some of the other benefits:

• Smart meters usually mean an end to estimated bills!  They will help us to bill you more accurately and avoid the inconvenience of manual meter reads.
• As a customer you will have more control over your energy use and costs by seeing how much you use on a day-to-day basis. This should help you reduce your consumption and your bills.
• We also hope that more customers will use our energy efficiency service, so we can advise you how to minimise consumption with up-to-date information from the smart meter.

We believe that in order for customers to reduce their energy usage they must first understand what they use and when they use it - smart meters will make that possible which is why we are committed to installing them for all of our customers.
