Onshore wind: Blowing away the hot air
RSS Feed
Opponents of onshore wind farms fired another salvo when 101 MPs wrote to the Prime Minister arguing that the government should be reducing subsidies to wind farms, and imposing stronger planning restrictions. View the letter and the MPs who signed it.
This is despite the fact that the latest research commissioned by the Sunday Times shows that a majority of the public thinks Britain should use more wind power, and supports further Government investment in wind.
At Good Energy, we know that renewables can give the UK lasting energy security as we face the twin challenges of reducing our carbon emissions and the declining availability of fossil fuels. But if we are to effectively harness our renewable energy resources to meet our future energy needs, then we need to use the full range of technologies we have at our disposal to do so.
The UK is the windiest country in Europe and wind power, both onshore and offshore, should be a vital part of our future energy mix. It is also the most cost effective renewable technology, and those costs continue to fall. By 2030, the independent Committee on Climate Change believes that onshore wind could be cheaper than nuclear, coal and gas.
At time when the UK energy market's exposure to wildly fluctuating international fossil fuel prices leaves households and businesses facing sky rocketing bills, we need wind power more than ever.
We're concerned that, once again, a vocal minority is swaying MP's opinions, while the silent majority is not being heard. So we’d like to urge our customers and supporters who live in the constituencies of those MPs to write to them and tell them you don’t agree.
- Did your MP sign the letter? You can find out from the list above. If you are unsure of who your MP is you can easily find out by entering your postcode – you’ll be able to get their postal address and email address too.
- We've drafted a template letter for you to send them, which includes the main arguments – although it would be good to personalise it for your own situation, and you should make sure you include your own address so they know you are in their constituency.
- Even if your MP did not sign the letter, there’s no harm in reminding them that as a constituent you are in favour of onshore wind power – in case the issue comes up again.
We hope that if as many wind supporters as possible speak out, then MPs will get the message loud and clear. We’d love to hear about any interesting responses you get – you can post them below, or email us at campaigns@goodenergy.co.uk
Together we do this.
