The British Gas price rises announced this morning demonstrate the problems caused for the UK by our over-reliance on energy from overseas. Almost 60 percent of energy we use is imported and the latest rises in wholesale prices are largely due to events we have no control over in the UK – such as in Asia and in North Africa.

We need to generate more homegrown power here in the UK and increase the amount of renewables in our fuel mix.  Currently in the European Union only Cyprus and Malta generate less renewable energy than the UK, putting us in the bottom three. 

The UK is the windiest country in Europe.  We have the resources to lead the way in renewables.  But we need the right infrastructure to deliver it.  We are campaigning hard to achieve this, and supporting our pioneering generators all over the UK making the most of our natural resources to deliver safe, reliable, homegrown energy.
