William Hague MP switches on innovative community hydro scheme

We are pleased that a fantastic new renewable project has joined our community of over 2,000 independent generators. The River Bain Hydro, a community-owned hydro scheme in the village of Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales, was officially switched on by William Hague, MP for Richmond (Yorkshire) this month.
The River Bain Hydro has an installed capacity of 45kW, which will generate enough electricity for around 40 homes. It will save around 80 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, or 3,000 tonnes over an expected lifetime of 40 years.
At the launch, William Hague commented on the simplicity of the scheme and its environmental credentials, noting that the effects of climate change can only tackled “if across the world there are local efforts to make sure we are considering the resources of our planet and using them wisely”.
As the UK’s only electricity supplier 100% committed to renewables, and champion of community projects, Good Energy is delighted to buy the output from the River Bain project. We have strict environmental policies in place for all the electricity we purchase. Small-scale hydro is a wonderful way of using our natural resources to generate clean, green energy.
River Bain Hydro Ltd is an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community. Once shareholders have been paid, any excess profits will be used to support local environmental projects in the River Bain catchment area.
