Thinking of switching to a more ethical electricity supplier?
RSS Feed
Here’s 10 questions you should ask:
1. How many tariffs do you have?
Good Energy has always had one main, easy- to-understand tariff – and new customers get exactly the same terms and conditions as long-standing ones. There are no penalties for switching and no fixed-term contracts.
2. What is your fuel mix?
Fuel mix is a better indication of greenness than tariff, as it demonstrates an energy supplier’s overall commitment to renewables. The average proportion of renewable electricity supplied in the UK is 6.6% some utility providers supply less than that, some do much, much better. Good Energy is the only supplier whose fuel mix is 100% renewable. We do not source any energy from nuclear power. Fuel mix can be viewed on this independent website http://www.electricityinfo.org/
3. Where does your energy come from?
All the electricity supplied by Good Energy is sourced from independent renewable generators across the UK – it is truly ‘homegrown energy.’ We supply from a mix of renewable technologies, specifically wind, wave, small-scale hydro, sustainable biogeneration and solar.
4. Is your supply independently certified?
Good Energy’s main tariff is independently certified by the Green Electricity Supply Certification scheme, which guarantees that it is 100% renewable and offers a genuine environmental benefit. We are the only electricity supplier to get a rating of 100% from the Good Shopping Guide, and we get top rating from Ethical Consumer.
5. What is your ownership model?
Good Energy was funded by a mixture of funders, including our customers and our generators have who invested over £2.7 million in cash in three share offers and represent around 80% of our shareholder base.
6. Do you offer a profit-share to customers?
Over 80% of our shareholders are customers and renewable generators, and are entitled to dividends paid by the company. In December 2010 we announced our maiden dividend payment of 2.5p per share which has gone some way in thanking those customers and generators who are investors, some of whom have been with us for over 10 years. We hope to recognise the success and growing maturity of the business and intend to operate a progressive dividend policy.
7. Do you campaign on green and energy issues?
Good Energy has a long history of successful innovation and campaigning in the energy industry: we lobbied for independent certification of Green electricity, Feed-in Tariffs and a Renewable Heat Incentive long before these measures were actually implemented by the industry and the government. By launching innovative schemes in these areas, we demonstrated what could be achieved.
8. Are you investing to grow renewables in the UK?
Good Energy recently completed the redevelopment of Delabole wind farm in Cornwall, which was the UK’s first commercial wind farm. This represented an investment of £11.8 million, or £455 per customer. We’re planning to add 50 MW of new capacity in the next five years – enough to power a town the size of Cambridge. On behalf of our customers we are investing in community renewable heat schemes. So far these have included biomass boilers at a school near Bath and a community swimming pool at Portishead.
9. It’s easy to claim to be ‘ethical’, how does this work in practice?
Good Energy has strict ethical supplier guidelines, we have a stringent ethical procurement policy for all our energy, and we have staff policies in place to encourage our staff to be greener – we were a pioneer in launching personal carbon tracking for employees (PACT).
10. What is the cost compared to ‘brown’ electricity?
Good Energy’s green tariff works out at just 75p more a week for the average household, compared with the average standard tariff and held our prices over the winter when others were putting them up!
