Power to the People

Voting reform and renewable energy make unlikely bedfellows. But here at Good Energy, we’re all for giving people more choice. Our CEO Juliet Davenport set up Good Energy not only because of a determined desire to tackle climate change, but also because she wanted to offer consumers the opportunity choose an energy provider that was 100% committed to renewable energy. At the core of our mission is a desire to give people the option of choosing something that is important to them – because it makes a real and lasting difference.

When it was announced last year that the UK would get the chance to choose the way in which we elect our politicians, we thought that this was great news. Our commitment to renewable energy is matched with our commitment to see a more democratic approach to the way it is generated. That’s why we’re founded on a vision of turning the energy industry upside down, putting real power in the hands of consumers and generators, fundamentally changing the way in which we view energy in the process.

So what does this have to do with tomorrow’s referendum? Well, at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, at the very least it’s the chance for us all to make a choice, for the first time ever in the UK, about the way in which we elect our politicians. And whatever the outcome, that choice will have a real and lasting difference – so surely that can only be a good thing.

If we pick AV, then it could see the biggest shake up in our political system in a long-time, breaking the historical duopoly of the two major parties. That in turn would mean that other parties, including those with a long-standing commitment to tackling climate change, could get a chance to breakthrough in to the mainstream and perhaps even play a role in Government. If we decide to stick with First Past the Post, then that leaves the issue of voting reform dead in the water for the foreseeable future.

So which side is Good Energy backing? Well, all we’ll say is that, true to our beliefs, we support whichever option is more likely to give people greater choice and improve their ability to make a difference. If people feel that turning up to the ballot box is more likely to have a lasting impact and their views are more likely to be reflected in whatever Government is formed, they’re probably going to be more likely to vote - we’ll let you decide whether that’s FPTP or AV!

Either way the most important winner tomorrow has to be people power – our right to choose that way in which our democracy works. And for Good Energy, which is dedicated to seeing the same people power used to deliver clean, green renewable energy that can only be a good thing.
