South Penquite: Getting close to nature

Solar thermal 5kw solar PV array and 5kW wind turbine
Dominic and Cathy Fairman
Bodmin Moor, Cornwall
The campers that stay at South Penquite Farm in Cornwall every year get even closer to nature than you might expect. The area’s rich history and beautiful scenery are one thing, but showering in rainwater heated by the sun, campsite amenities powered by solar energy and hearty meals of mutton reared in the neighbouring field? You can’t get much closer than that.
Owner Dominic Fairman’s parents farmed South Penquite before him but he’s made significant changes in the last few years – installing solar thermal panels, a 5kW solar PV array and a 5kW wind turbine. He’s also converted to farming organically and short of buying in a few oats from a neighbour the farm “now only holds the livestock it can sustain naturally.”
“I definitely get the same level of satisfaction from 'growing my own energy' as I do from growing my own food,” says Dominic. “The key with both is how much more aware you are of their value once you start producing them. For us it’s about the message campers take home. We know it inspires people to think, ‘D'ya-know, I could do that.’”
We're sponsoring this year's Real Food Festival. To celebrate we’re giving a bottle of Biodynamic Champagne from Good Energy customer Vintage Roots, the organic wine people, to everyone who switches to our 100% renewable electricity between Friday April 29th and Sunday May 8th. Together we do this.
