Last week’s Earth Day focused on persuading people across the world to pledge a billion acts of green and show their commitment to protecting the planet. At Good Energy we’re proud to have employees that live green every day of the year. And some are really, really green.

In September last year two thirds of Good Energy employees signed up to PACT – Personal Allowance Carbon Tracking – the world’s first voluntary staff carbon trading scheme. One of these was Max in our Customer Care team who, after being responsible for the release of just 27kgs of C02 in the last six months - the annual carbon footprint of the average Briton is 10.92 tonnes - was named PACT’s Carbon Hero this month.

PACT asked him what his three top tips were for keeping his carbon footprint so low and we wanted to share them with you.

“One of the most simple steps I took in reducing my carbon footprint dramatically was to switch to a 100% renewable electricity supply from Good Energy. This saves me around 2.6 tonnes of C02 per year (this figure’s based on my own usage and the UK grid average).  Although green energy is slightly more expensive in the UK, I’m trained to provide energy savings advice endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust which I have used to reduce my overall consumption so now I’m actually spending less than I did with a brown electricity supplier.

Moving to a property with excellent public transport links and being close to local amenities helped me further reduce my footprint. It was also a good compromise in convincing my partner to ditch the car!

Car sharing has also been an effective way of reducing my personal carbon emissions as well as other people’s. For example, with limited public transport to social activities such as festivals, my friends and I have devised our own carpooling scheme. This means we can share the Co2 burden, reducing not only our own carbon footprints but also our travel costs which in itself is a great incentive.”

We're sponsoring this year's Real Food Festival. To celebrate we’re giving a bottle of Biodynamic Champagne from Good Energy customer Vintage Roots, the organic wine people, to everyone who switches to our 100% renewable electricity between Friday April 29th and Sunday May 8th. Together we do this.
