We’re sure we’re not alone when we say we have a bit of a love-hate relationship with most Smartphone applications. It’s so easy to fritter away 59p here – yes, we’re thinking Angry Birds – and a couple of quid there. But they all just sit there, fighting for space on what was once such a sleek and uncluttered interface.

However, there are times when apps really can bring something to your life. Shazam has meant we’re never left aurally frustrated when we can’t relive that great tune we caught in that really cool bar that one time. And Kill-O-Watts helps you cut your energy consumption – and your bills – by identifying the top electricity consumers of your home.

You can choose from more than 120 typical appliances or create new ones based on those you own. You then input the amount of use the application gets on a regular basis. Kill-O-Watts calculates how much energy each appliance consumes – you can even try different usage scenarios to find possible savings – and how much you pay for it on a monthly and yearly basis. It can also be used to assist you with your next household appliance purchase by calculating which one will consume less energy. Now that’s 59p well spent. And it’s got a great name too.

Unfortunately Kill-O-Watts is currently only available for iPhones but we can only hope it will be extended to other smarthpone models.
