Earth Hour

This Saturday at 8.30 pm will see buildings and households across the world plunge into darkness for Earth Hour to raise awareness of climate change. Founded in Sydney in 2007 Earth Hour quickly went viral and this year sees 131 countries participating, with organisers hoping that hundreds of millions of people will switch their power off. Iconic landmarks like Paris’ Eiffel Tower, New York’s Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Colosseum in Rome and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil will all be spending Earth Hour in the dark too.

A chance to reflect on the small things we can all do to make a difference we asked a few people around the office what they’ll be doing. Unsurprisingly, candles were quite a feature – to ensure that even these are as ethical as possible, pick up a pack of our eco tea lights.

Dawn in our marketing team will be having a candlelit bubble bath, and Martin, our head of marketing has friends round for dinner. They’ll be enjoying their locally bought lamb by candelight too. Sophy and Louise in our PR team will be telling their respective children ghost stories in front of a crackling fire and Joe, in charge of our affiliate relationships, will be taking advantage of the lack of electric light to take his kids star-gazing; they’ll be illuminating their way with their wind up penguin torches available at the Good Energy Shop.

We want you to hear your ideas for how to spend an hour with the lights off. Leave them as a comment on the blog or our facebook page and the best will win a Wattson Energy Monitor worth £99.95.
