Harnessing energy from the wind: Wind Turbines
RSS Feed
The UK is the windiest country in Europe, so it’s a fantastic free energy source, especially when you consider that the wind normally blows the most in winter, which is when we use the most electricity.
The stronger the wind resource the more electricity you will generate. Typically, a good location for a wind turbine is on high ground with a gradual slope descending in front of the turbine. Depending on where you are in the UK, a site facing between west and south west is ideal. There should be no tall obstacles within 50m of the turbine for example trees and other buildings, as these create turbulence which can affect the turbine's overall performance. The average minimum wind speed recommended is five m/s at 10 metres above ground level help ensure your wind project is viable.
Under the current government Feed-in Tariff you can get paid for all the units that you generate (even if these are used onsite) and for the exported units.
