The 2009 budget is being unfolded this minute with Alastair Darling in the Commons. Will it match the government’s rhetoric of a UK green new deal? We’ll give a round up of the best commentary tomorrow but for now, and to mull over, here are the juicy bits:

  • This is apparently the world's first "Carbon Budget."
  • £525m support for wind power, and a speeding up of projects (The Thames project perhaps?)
  • £435m for energy efficiency measures in homes and public buildings – he’s saying this is the easiest way to cut emissions.
  • A REAL LIFE CARBON EMISSIONS TARGET, AT LAST!  He’s committing Britain to a 34% cut by 2020.
  • £435m for other green technologies
  • A funding “Mechanism” (Hmmmmm) for carbon capture. You can guess then what’s coming next: Yup Oil, coal and gas will continue to be a part of our future energy mix. (Perhaps that’s a green light for Kingsnorth then?)

It's no $67 billion like Obama's, but let us know what you think. Comments below then…
